Communications Overview (GS 6.1)

How you establish communications between the personal computer on which you are running STEP 7-Micro/WIN 32 and your PLC(s) depends on your hardware installation. If you are using nothing more than a PC/PPI cable connection between your personal computer and the PLC, all you have to do is connect the cable and accept the default parameters that are assigned in STEP 7-Micro/WIN 32 for the personal computer and PLC when you install the STEP 7-Micro/WIN 32 software.

You can establish communications or edit communication settings at any time.

Here are the tasks that are typically required for establishing communications:

·Connect a cable between your PLC and the personal computer on which you are running STEP 7-Micro/WIN 32. For simple PC/PPI connections, set the dipswitches to 9600 baud, DCE, 11-bit. If you are using a modem or communications card, consult the installation instructions that came with the hardware.

·Optional: Make sure the PLC type selection in STEP 7-Micro/WIN 32 matches the actual type of your PLC.

·If you are using a simple PC/PPI connection, you can accept the default communications protocol that is offered in the "Setting the PG/PC Interface" dialog box when you install STEP 7-Micro/WIN 32. Otherwise, select a different communications protocol and verify the parameters (station address, baud rate, etc.) for your personal computer from the "Setting the PG/PC Interface " dialog box.

·Optional: Verify the configuration (station address, baud rate, etc.) for your PLC in the Port(s) tab of the System Block. If necessary, make changes and download the changed System Block.
